Another Free Christmas SVG

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! I love the chalkboard look so thought I’d work it into this Christmas Inkscape illustration.

For the chalk font, I used the freehand tool, added nodes, jittered nodes, and finally blurred it slightly. The “twinkle” on the lights is created with the star tool. To give the ornament some depth, I duplicated the shape, removed the fill, and chose a little darker color for the outline. I then blurred the outline. Finally, I duplicated the shape again and used it to “clip” the ornament shape which cleaned up the blur that had bled outside the shape.

Trick or Treat… and an Inkscape Super Hero

little boy dressed up for HalloweenTomorrow is the day for trick-or-treaters. I’ve stated in a previous post that Halloween is not my favorite holiday. I do, however have fond memories of trick-or-treating as a youngster. How simple and innocent life was then. Since I grew up in a city neighborhood where houses were less than a stone’s throw from each other, it didn’t take long to fill up an old pillowcase with candy. It was even safe for all but the littlest kids to go out with friends… no adult needed.

After returning home, pillowcases were dumped on the living room floor where candy was sorted and traded. If Mother and Dad were lucky, they might even get a few of our cast-offs. Since I seemed to be born with a sweet tooth, it didn’t take me long to begin eating my way through the stash.

I have to wonder now how all that candy did not make me sick, make my teeth fall out, or at the very least put a few pounds on me. But alas, I survived it all without any adverse affects on my health.

I am not offering my Super Hero as an SVG because much of it needs cleaning up. I would not want to share it without taking the time to fix it. However, there are a few simple tricks I used in this drawing that might be helpful to new Inkscapers, and I’ll try to get a tutorial up soon to share these.

Happy drawing.

Baby, It’s Cold Outside

illustration of a snow globeOkay, maybe it isn’t all THAT cold. But, for some reason 40 degrees and rain feels colder to me than 20 degrees and snow! The truth is, I can’t wait for the first snowfall…. which according to the forecast, may happen tonight! Woo hoo! I love to watch the snow while I’m cuddled up by the fireplace. As much as I love to watch it fall, it will no doubt lose it’s appeal after a month or so of dealing with the white stuff. No matter though… we’ll be heading to warmer climate soon enough.

To address another subject, I appreciate your patience while I’ve been working on my new site. It has taken me awhile to get traffic directed here, but I think all should be working smoothly now. I will continue to tweak things as I go.

If you’d like an SVG of my tree with the tire swing, click here. The SVG includes snow on the swing and branches, but just delete the snow and you’ve got a great Halloween tree.

Happy drawing.
